Zoo trip

We went to our local zoo yesterday and enjoyed watching the monkeys and apes exhibition along with some manatees, tigers and a komodo dragon. It was a little chilly, but there wasn't much of crowd, which was a big bonus.

Fire and Ice

A few days ago there was a fire that burned down a business block just a couple of blocks down from our place. Thankfully, I haven't heard any reports of deaths or major injuries. I hope the businesses will be able to find other suitable homes until they repair the building.

Kai turns 3!

Three years ago today, my son Kai was born in the comfort of our home. With the assistance of our midwife Kathy, the company and support of my mom, husband and friend Anne, Kai had a peaceful and gentle waterbirth. January 9th also marks the day that I officially became a mother and Jason a father. We can't believe how fast he's grown and how much we can't image our lives without him now. Happy Birthday son!

Jason and I decided to join our workstations in to one, so we splurged and got ourselves a new imac and a new workspace as xmas gifts to one another. It's a combination of four effektiv cabinets from ikea and two numerar countertops. We are both really happy with the results and hope to start the new year clutter free and ready to work on new projects. Now if we can only figure out how to hide all of the cables and wires, we'll be set.

On a side note, my older sister Arlete ran the Columbus marathon (!) for the first time this weekend. She's the one to the left with pigtails in an orange shirt. I am SO proud of her! I waited for her to pass by my street at the 22 mile leg of the marathon for about two hours, passing the time talking politics with my neighbor.

When I finally did see her, I ran with her for about a block, took some pictures than lost my breath and walked back home. Needless to say, I won't be running a marathon any time soon.

One of my best friends, Anne got me this sweet little vintage bird book last week while looking for vintage maps. It has the cutest bird paintings dating back to the early 1900's. Thank you so much Anne!

Little Kai Series and Craftin' Outlaws

This little illustration is part of a series I started a while back and am now just getting around to finishing (how many times have I used that line?). Inspired by Kai and all the wonders of being a small child. It measures 5.5x8.5 inches and now is available in the shop.

I also wanted to share some pics from this weekend. Here's my booth spot during Craftin' Outlaws on the top floor of BoMa , right next to Anne. I have to say the venue was much better this year as it was beautiful and more spacious and everyone got to be inside. The show went really well, I ran into some old friends and got to chat with Anne during the slow periods. But the one thing I was really excited about which may sound a little silly is this:

We bought a hand truck from Uline to haul the panels and inventory boxes, which made everything so much easier. And now whenever we move or buy furniture it will be a lot smoother to transport everything! Oh, and did I mention Kai loved playing "truck" with Papa?

Here's a shot of downstairs. I wish I had gotten a chance to get more pictures, but this was the best I could do with the time I had. And below is Anne at Northstar Cafe, where we went to eat after the show. All in all a great weekend.

Lazy Daze Fest and new Floral Prints

I participated in our Lazy Daze festival this past weekend, above is the picture of my booth panels...I don't have a shot of me in the booth as Jason had his hands full with Kai. It was good to see some friends I hadn't seen in a while and meet some new ones, although it was super hot and sticky. I even ran home (the festival was literally a block from where I live) for a half-hour to jump in the shower and refresh.

And being the neglectful blogger that I am, I have forgotten to mention some new floral prints I have had available in the shop in the past week. Without further delay here they are:

There will be a few more in different color combos in the next few days. Notice the unflattering little watermarks? I finally decided I need to add them on. Yeah, I was notified last week that a Korean t-shirt company was using my owl images on their shirts. One of their best sellers too. Sigh. They at least complied with my request and took it down from the site. Several other Etsy artist's were getting ripped off too. Thankfully they took them down as well.

Bunnies, Peonies and a little vacation

Happy Friday everyone! I will be going to Michigan this weekend and be gone until the 6th. I will keep my shop open and try to answers emails and convos, but orders won't go out until July 7th.

p.s. Thanks to those who have convoed or emailed me about the previous post as well as left me a comment on the last post. The other seller from the previous post has apologized and said her friend send her the image claiming it was "royalty-free".....

My Work is NOT Public Domain

None of these items were granted permission to use my illustrations. I have contacted all parties (including Etsy's administration) and one still has yet to reply (I convoed her yesterday evening). The one who's pendant sold. That situation is still pending.... but I need to make a point.

It is terribly disheartening to see my work being used without permission, for profit, as if it were public domain when I am still alive and ticking, trying to make a living with my work. The seller who did reply back, has removed the tote bags and apologized, saying that she had found the images on a blog which featured fabrics and wouldn't have used the image if she had known they were mine. She doesn't remember the name of the blog, so there is no way of me tracking it down.... Regardless, any work you see online or elsewhere is made by someone and unless you know it to be public domain, you can't just load into your computer as if it were. I work hard to create my illustrations and retain full copyright, unless I have made a licensing agreement, which is not the case for any of the works I have in my Etsy shop.

A similar situation dealing with a larger entity happened not too long ago to a friend in the U.K.

Thank goodness for those in the online community who are keeping an eye out for this sort of thievery. Thank you Stephanie and Elise for letting me know!

New Limited Editions Prints

Now that both of the originals have sold, I am making a limited edition run of the two paintings I had in the "La Femme" show at the Nucleus Gallery. I have to say, I am really happy about the way they turned out as prints. You can see the wood grain and brushstrokes beautifully. Although prints will never quite be as good as the original, I do think these come really close. They are both available right here in the shop.

I did want to share this beautiful Jen Corace print I received a couple of days ago in the mail. I have to admit, it was a rare impulse buy, although Jason may dispute the rarity of my impulse buys. But I've been wanting to own one of her works, and since I can't exactly afford an original, I had to get my hands on one of her prints as soon as I found out they were available. And let me tell you, it does not disappoint.

Little (sneaky) Hands

Yes, these very precious little hands locked me out of the house yesterday while I was checking on our plants. While they stayed in. Running right along with the precious little feet away from the door and window with no clue what they had done. Thank goodness for good neighbors and a tip from our maintenance guy, I got a hold of a local locksmith and was able to get in the house within a short time. Oh my sneaky little boy.... what am I going to do with you?

I ordered this beautiful children's book, Around the World with Mouk a couple weeks ago and I couldn't be more smitten! The details, the colors, the characters. It even comes with these little vinyl stickers on the back for you to place in the glossy pages. Just an absolute gem. Of course, it will be Kai's, but I have to wait until he outgrows his impulse to rip pages apart first. Until then, I will cherish every page.

And here are some preliminary pen and ink drawings of some illustrations for small magazine that I've finished this week. I will post the finished ones when the magazine's summer issue goes live. And let you know when I make the prints available in my Etsy shop .

Planet Earth

We've been staying up late watching the BBC's planet earth documentary series and it is absolutely breathtaking. I've always loved watching nature documentaries, this is probably the most impressive series I've seen. If you haven't seen it already, I would highly recommend renting or putting in your Netflix queue. We are now at the very last segment; "planet earth, the future" where the creators and conservationists discuss the problems with the conservation movement and all the complexities of sustainability and trying to truly "save our planet". Watching this documentary has Jason and myself revisiting our perennial discussions on how we can live in a more sustainable matter. I know "green goods" and "green living" seem to be part of our daily vernacular now, with everyone from Home Depot to Macy's jumping in on the trend. But I hope something is truly shifting in our collective consciousness, something that will outlast any trend and become part of the way we design, conduct business and simply live our lives.

Weekend update

This weekend my parents came down to visit for my birthday and while hanging out in our little back patio, my dad decided we needed some tomato and zucchini planted in our garden. Problem is, we don't really have a garden! So my dad just got a shovel and started digging up a little patch of the lawn. Above is the little tomato plant he planted the same day. Muito obrigado pai!

We also went here for lunch and stumbled into the new artisan sunday market, which my very good friend was participating in. I will be filling in for her next month, so swing by!

i did get to go on a run this morning since jason was so sweet to take the day off.

maybe we'll go grab some food at our favorite cafe and go to a bookstore. nothing fancy. just spend some time together. :)

Blooming Dogwoods

This year it seems as if Spring took a few extra weeks to really show up around Columbus, but when she finally did, she brought some of the most beautiful Dogwood blooms I have seen in years. And dogwoods just happen to be one of my very favorite spring blooms. I wouldn't be surprised if they show up in a couple of future illustrations.....

Of course, I had to take my new Nikon around the neighborhood and document them. :)

Good Mail Days

This has been one heck of a mail week!

First I received Petie the little Cotton Monster, which I absolutely adore. Um, I mean Kai adores. ;) The Creative Family book by Amanda Soule which at times makes me cry little tears of joy at the creativity and love that goes on in the Soule household. The last book to the left is Lotta Jansdotter simple sewing book that I received on Tuesday.

Then yesterday, I received my Nikon D80 SLR camera kit. Oh, I am already so in love with this camera. It's only been a day, I know, but it's everything I wished for and more. I've been wanting to upgrade to a SLR for a long time now, and I finally took the plunge. Couldn't be any happier.

These pictures of Kai (who by the way is loving having his picture taken as much as I love to take his picture) were taken this afternoon. Even at low exposure it looks good.

Instead of working on some paintings for a show in May, I worked on some illustrations inspired by Kai this weekend. He's learning his numbers and letters and loves bears. You can find it right here. You could say I've been thinking about the kind of art I'd want to see in his room.... hence the teal and black color scheme.

Citizen Aline

Today I thought I would share what I did this morning while Jason stayed home and took care of our sick little Kai.....I was sworn in as a citizen of the United States! Yep, after having lived in the US as a permanent resident since 1994, I've finally gotten around to becoming a citizen! Which means I can finally vote!!! (anyone who knows me, knows I'm an avid NPR listener, keeping me very up to date on politics and current events)

The ceremony itself was a very formal procedure, it took place in a district courthouse. There were about 50 other immigrants attending to become naturalized. There was a small group from Somalia and Ethiopia, some of the others attending were from Laos, South Korea, Mexico, Sweden, Russia, Canada, Iran, Pakistan and India..... I was the only one from Brazil. We were asked to dress formally and had to go through final paper work before being sworn in and given our naturalization certificate (the equivalent of a birth certificate). The judge gave a really inspiring introduction about how the US is a nation founded by immigrants and talked about the mosaic and melting pot that is America... we were then asked to stand and take an oath and pledge allegiance to the flag. Something I hadn't done since probably middle school, but still remembered all the words.

For now, I'm back to taking care of a sick little toddler :( The doctor says he should be feeling better in a few days.....

First, I just wanted to say thanks for everyone for your kind words about the new set of prints in the last couple of posts!

As the weekend is just around the corner, I'm finally getting around to posting what I was up to last weekend....have I mentioned what a slacker blogger I am?

My parents were in town and as usual we went to the North Market for brunch.... I had the Vietnamese beef noodle soup, without the beef and then some of Jeni's ice cream. If you are ever in Columbus, you must, must indulge in some of her freshly made, exotically flavored ice creams and gelatos. Mmmmmm......

And after reading an article in Readymade magazine about organization, I finally decided to start tackling all this unnecessary clutter in our house, starting with cleaning out my studio and closet.

Although not a terribly dramatic difference in the photos, since I took the "before" more like in the middle of the cleaning, I thought I'd still share my work area and how I've recently reorganized it (not very glamorous, I know, but very functional and baby proof)

......my little white love birds print in page 80! then I was disappointed to see a typo: my shop's name wasn't credited, but another etsian, Elista's shop was :( Elsita was kind enough to say that she'll direct anyone who asks about the print to my shop.....Thanks Elsita! I should mention that I'm still very happy that it was used in the article :)
